Just like in the Netherlands, you also need gas, water and electricity in Curaçao to cook, cool your drinks and use the air conditioning. But how does it work in Curaçao and where can you arrange it? Read below!
Curgas
Other than in The Netherlands, considerably less gas is consumed on Curaçao. This of course has to do with the great temperature (all year round about 28-30 degrees Celsius). This makes a heating installation unnecessary. That is why there are no gas pipelines in the houses on Curacao. However, most people use gas to cook which comes from a gas cylinder. At least one gas cylinder is available for each home. Is this empty? Then, if it is present, you can switch to a second reserve gas cylinder. Is not it present? Then it’s time to eat out! Hint: Order as soon as possible a new bottle because sometimes it can take a long time.
If your gas bottle is empty or if you are a new customer, you can arrange this at one of the branches of Curgas.
Aqualectra – Water and electricity
Aqualectra is the water and electricity company in Curaçao. When you buy a house, you put the Aqualectra account on your own name. When renting a house, it depends on what the owner wants. Sometimes it remains in the name of the owner who will give you the bill, sometimes you will have to put the connection on your own name. You can easily pay the Aqualectra account at various supermarkets, gas stations, but also via internet. For electricity there is also a prepaid system, Pagatinu. In this article you can read all about the Pagatinu system. Water on Curaçao is also in the management of Aqualectra. Curaçao has its own water factory that desalts about 50,000 tons of seawater per day into drinking water! The drinking water on Curacao is one of the best in the world. Aqualectra has a clear website where you can find all the information. Click here to go to the site of Aqualectra.
In Curaçao is the AC 110-127 Volt (50Hz), while in Europe you have to deal with mains voltage that is 220V. Electrical appliances that are suitable for both mains voltages (always check the operating manual!) can be used with the help of an adapter that is sold in many stores; among others at Kooyman, Goisco but also at many mini-markets. Most houses on Curaçao also have 220 V connections, usually at least for the air conditioning. However, nowadays you see that in new homes more and more 220 V sockets are being made. If you have devices that only work on 220 V, you can only use them with the help of a transformer. Really sensitive devices can optionally be secured with a voltage protector.
